The role of the father in childbirth – how can he help the woman?

  • 3 Read Time

Childbirth is a turning point not only for women, but also for men. If the father decides to be a part of it, he can help the woman in many ways, and the intense experience of the baby's arrival can strengthen their bond together. The presence of a man at birth usually gives the woman a sense of peace, security and support, which helps relieve stress and release oxytocin, which has a beneficial effect on the smooth course of childbirth.

Based on our experience, we have 5 tips for you on how a man can support a woman during childbirth:

1. Tune in to each other before giving birth

Why wait until the finish line when he can be part of the whole amazing journey? A woman starts preparing for childbirth during pregnancy, and if a man actively participates, it is always a benefit for both of you - you will feel his support, you will feel that you are not alone, and at the same time he will understand your needs better. In joint courses, you will learn how childbirth takes place, but also how a man can help you relieve pain during it (e.g. with massage and other methods) and how to tune in to each other. Towards the end of your pregnancy, you can also start practicing correct breathing technique with Aniball, which is the key to relaxation during childbirth.

2. Support that is invaluable

Fear, uncertainty, pain – you will probably experience all of this during childbirth, and these concerns can prevent you from naturally relaxing. And it is at such moments that the presence of the future father at the birth will be irreplaceable. By holding your hand, stroking, gentle touches and encouraging words, she assures you that she is there for you, supports you and gives you the strength and courage you need. In an environment full of love, intimacy and safety, you can relax better and oxytocin plays its role - the hormone of love and happiness, which (among other things) helps to form interpersonal relationships, partner warmth, intimacy and also the bond with the upcoming baby.

3. Breathing is essential during childbirth

During prenatal training, deep, smooth inhalation and exhalation taught you how to relax your pelvic floor muscles to ease your baby's journey into the world. However, during childbirth itself, there may be moments when you lose confidence - at such moments, a partner steps in to help you find peace again - for example, by reminding you of the breathing techniques you practiced together during pregnancy. The ability to relax contributes to a better birth experience.

4. Pain relief

Childbirth is a very intense experience, and pain and contractions can be just as intense. A properly performed back massage or a warm shower can help relieve tension and possibly ease pain. Many women have a natural need to spontaneously change positions during labor - here too, a man can be a great support, as well as when he helps you get out of bed or holds you while you walk.

5. Talk about your wishes

Try to think about your wishes and preferences regarding childbirth during your prenatal preparation. Of course - the course of childbirth can never be planned in advance, but you can discuss different scenarios together and talk about them completely openly. Some women feel calmer when they know that their man can communicate their wishes to the birthing staff if necessary.

A man should provide loving support, a sense of security, certainty and intimacy to a woman during childbirth, as well as physical assistance and strength. When he is sensitively involved in the birth process, he positively influences its course and the overall experience. He is present at the moment of birth and with the baby's first breath, a bond is created for life.
